Acontece que foi exactamente o crescimento económico, baseado na queima de combustíveis fósseis e no consumo desenfreado, um dos principais responsáveis pelas alterações climáticas e a degradação ambiental. Assim o dizem vários cientistas:
"Economic Growth as a Major Cause of Environmental Crisis", Pacheco et al. 2018:"A transition to sustainability cannot be achieved if our economic system is not radically changed, simply because limitless economic growth is impossible within a limited planet. (…) humanity needs to recognize that the fundamental changes have to happen at the level of the ultimate cause of environmental crisis—that is, a global economic system dependent on growth."
"The Role of Scientists’ Warning in Shifting Policy from Growth to Conservation Economy", Ripple et al. 2018
Mas também alguns economistas:

Estes dois vídeos curtos sintetizam bem as razões da insustentabilidade do modelo económico baseado no crescimento:
"Our addiction to economic growth is killing us" (Jason Hickel): https://youtu.be/HckWP75yk9g
"Who killed economic growth?" (Richard Heinberg): https://youtu.be/EQqDS9wGsxQ
A estratégia da sra. von der Leyen não vai portanto correr bem!...
